The Evolution of a 997TT - Tuning Systems
Evolution Variable Turbo Systems "EVTS"

12-01-06 After many long and dedicated months of R&D, we are officially releasing our long awaited tuning systems for the 997TT. Along with the software development, we have spent a tremendous amount of time developing, testing and manufacturing many new 997TT specific performance components to compliment the software which creates the foundation of our tuning systems. The details highlighting our development process are outlined below.

Acquisition of our 997TT and initial impressions: Our initial testing started on July 17, 2006 after taking delivery of one of the first 997TT’s in the country. We spent a great deal of time analyzing this new platform and as much as we were anxious to compare it to the 996TT, we found ourselves realizing that this was a new animal. After spending a few hundred miles in the car we realized that though it was a great car, there was room for improvement.

Exhaust & High Flow Catalysts: After some baseline dyno testing and some more seat time, we knew that power improvements were going to be made in a similar way to the 996TT. Besides the software aspect of the tuning, we knew that the exhaust, headers, intake and cooling were going to be key components to the overall power upgrades that we developed. Our initial exhaust tests showed that there was nearly 8 PSI of backpressure in the OEM exhaust system. This tremendous backpressure causes severely high EGT’s which is a huge performance bottleneck.

Our 997TT is fitted with a set of metal core HJS catalysts and hand fabricated straight pipes which offer a fantastic aggressive sound with virtually no backpressure. The reduction of backpressure substantially improves power and throttle response while reducing EGT’s by nearly 45 degrees Celsius. Dyno tests have confirmed that our straight pipe / catalyst system, as well as other well engineered exhaust systems by Milltek and Fabspeed offer substantial power gains. Power is increased by ~20-30 + HP/TQ from this upgrade alone and increased beyond this when incorporated into our tuning systems.

VTG Sport Headers: Next we addressed the headers where there was a huge improvement in flow and efficiency. Our hand fabricated VTG header systems utilize a slightly longer primary tube design and a F1 type smoother flow pyramid merge collector for more equalized exhaust pressures and better overall exhaust velocity. This enables the turbos to spool up quicker and "hit harder" as compared to the flat collector type OEM design. Our initial testing showed noticeable improved acceleration times and was later dyno verified by Stephen Kaspar of Imagine Auto (www.imagineauto.com). On IA’s 997TT, dyno tests showed ~ 17 HP and ~ 20 lb/ft TQ with the addition of our VTG headers.

Intake Breathing: The 997TT fresh air system is a nicer system as compared to the 996TT. The dual MAF sensors and dual air feed ducts to each turbo is a monumental improvement to the single system on its predecessor. Though an improvement, there was still room for further improvements. We have spent a tremendous time testing various different intake designs and saw little power gain on a stock 997TT. After we increased power of the engine through other areas, we started to see improvements with different intake setups. We are still in the testing phase of this part of the project; however we will be releasing a fully compatible intake system to our tuning systems in the very near future.

Intercooling: The desert is HOT..VERY HOT. We are fortunate to be able to engineer our intercoolers in the desert where they can be put to their test. Cooling is a fundamental aspect of all forced induction engines and the 997TT is no different. The OEM intercoolers on the 997TT are a slight improvement over the 996TT, though essentially the same design and efficiency rate. Our ClubSport intercoolers help reduce heat by reduced restriction and improved design. Our hand built aerospace intercooler cores are the latest in technology and incorporate our smoother flow cast aluminum and polished end tanks. Improved flow is attributed to larger end tank cavities, smoother airflow path and larger diameter inlet and outlet diameters. The final product offers ~ 35% better flow while maintaining cooling efficacy for improved performance.

Testing: We have logged hundreds of dyno tests, performed multiple track days, drag strip runs, top speed runs and have over 4000 miles on our test car. We have perform tests with 91 octane fuel, 93 octane and race fuels in climates ranging from freezing conditions to temperatures beyond 115 degrees Fahrenheit. We have tested at sea level to elevations above 6500 feet. We have data logged almost every single function of the engine with the factory issued PIWIS scan tool. We have performed real world performance tests with a GPS based performance data logging computer (www.driftbox.com). We have dedicated ourselves to the improvement of this incredible automobile and our results are a testament to this. We have relied on the critical input, road / dyno testing and real world evaluations provided by Imagine Auto (www.imagineauto.com). Additionally, we have relied on dealer / customer input from Sharkwerks (www.sharkwerks.com) for installation and consumer feedback of development components. Collectively we have more mileage and time invested to the R&D process and improvement of the 997TT than most owners will ever have on this even more incredible automobile.

Conclusion: We have enjoyed every single mile of road that our 997TT has traveled. All of the bugs that we have killed, (deer too – sorry Bambi – IA’s story) and all of the speeding tickets – no comment. We hope you enjoy your 997TT as much as we do and we invite you to share the experience we can offer you and your automobile. We are confident our dedication to the improvement of the 997TT is evident in all of our products and services.
